Description

A rare and imposing pair of 19th-century Balinese carved wood sculptures representing celestial deities (Devas) in a traditional pose of prayer and greeting (Anjali Mudra). Standing at an impressive 68 inches in height, these figures exhibit the refined craftsmanship of Indonesian sacred art, characterized by their serene facial expressions and elongated, aristocratic features.

Each figure is clad in elaborate, tiered ceremonial robes featuring intricate scrolling patterns and floral motifs carved in low relief. The sashes and sleeves are adorned with textured lattice-work and flame-like scrolling flanges that extend from the sides, adding a sense of ethereal movement to the solid wood. They wear high, tiered headdresses (mahkuta) with traditional ear flanges, and remnants of original polychrome pigments remain visible throughout the deep recesses of the carving, hinting at their former vibrant appearance.

The wood shows a weathered, aged patina consistent with their 19th-century origin, with natural vertical graining and historical wear that enhances their character. These sculptures represent a significant opportunity for collectors of Southeast Asian art, combining grand scale with a prestigious institutional provenance.
