Description

This piece is an exquisite example of a vintage natural history print or illustration, signed "Robinson" in the bottom right corner. The work is executed with fine detail, likely a hand-colored engraving, lithograph, or a high-quality reproduction thereof, consistent with scientific illustrations from the 19th or early 20th century.

The composition is a study in natural forms, presented in a diagrammatic style that was popular in publications of the era such as George Perry's Conchology or Georges Cuvier's works. The plate is vertically oriented and divided into distinct sections:

  • Left Section: Features several detailed illustrations of bivalve and spiral shells, including a prominent cross-section of a nautilus shell revealing its internal chambers. Below these are smaller, circular diagrams showing different shell orientations and internal views.
  • Right Section: A detailed anatomical illustration dominates the upper half, appearing to be the internal vestige or spine of a marine organism, possibly related to a type of squid or cuttlefish (such as a Spirula shell). The lower portion displays several individual illustrations of various types of feathers, showcasing intricate barbs and structures.

The artist's hand captures both scientific precision and a delicate aesthetic quality, blending botanical illustration with the principles of natural history documentation. The piece is currently presented in a simple silver-tone frame. An original signature from an artist with the surname Robinson is visible in the lower right, although specific artist details are subject to further research.
