About the artist: Hector Lombana Piñeres, (8 March 1930 – 19 October 2008) was a Colombian sculptor, painter, and architect from Riofrío, Magdalena. Lombana was born in Riofrío. One of the most prolific sculptors in history, his works can be seen all over the world, with monuments present in the cities of Cartagena de Indias, Santa Marta, Cali, Barrancabermeja, Bucaramanga, Honda, Cimitarra, and Villavicencio in Colombia, Penonomé and Panama City in Panama, and Coral Gables in Florida, United States. Famous examples include 'El Cangrejo' (The Crab), 'Los Zapatos Viejos' (Old Shoes), 'India Catalina', el 'Sendero Yuma' (Path of the Yuma), 'Monumento a la Solidaridad' (Monument to Solidarity), among others. He died in Santa Marta, aged. 78 His first job was a bust of Simón Bolívar carved in wood, at the age of four . At sixteen, he wins the first prize at the IX Salón de Arte Nacional de Colombia, in Cartagena de Indias. For nearly a decade, he became a patron of art and toured all over Europe. He remains in the old continent, In 1980 he moved to North America. Initially, he presides over the restoration project of the cathedral of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York, later becoming involved in the restoration processes of the city of Saint Augustine, Florida, the oldest on the península, finally settling in Miami. This is how he created the 'Esmeralda Award' aimed at promoting outstanding Colombians in all areas of knowledge: sports, art, culture and science
