This captivating mixed media work is by the self-taught Havana-based artist Alejandro Lazo (b. 1973). Lazo’s work is highly regarded for its exploration of palo monte, an African-derived religion with roots in the Congo and Angola. This piece features a complex, layered composition of figurative and symbolic elements, utilizing a rich palette of earth tones, deep reds, and ochres to evoke the spiritual "room of the nganga". The central figures and skeletal motifs reflect the animistic imagination and the intersection of light and darkness central to the artist's belief system. Lazo’s style is characterized by raw, energetic brushwork and a powerful narrative that challenges social perceptions of Afro-Cuban spiritualism. The painting is presented in a clean black frame with an off-white mat and includes the artist's biographical information on the reverse.
