Description
This is a finely detailed, original 1764 engraved map of the Lesser Antilles, commonly known as the Windward Islands, created by the esteemed French hydrographer and geographer, Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772). Bellin was a prominent cartographer of the mid-18th century, serving as the first Ingénieur de la Marine at the French Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine.
The map, titled in French "Les Petites Antilles ou les isles du Vent," extends from the Virgin Islands in the north down to Trinidad in the south. Key islands such as Martinique, Guadeloupe, Barbados, St. Vincent, and Grenada are clearly delineated. The map is rich with cartographic details, including rhumb lines, depth soundings, and a decorative title cartouche. It uses the "Longitude Occidentale du Meridien de Paris" for its measurements.
This chart was originally published as part of Bellin's six-volume Le petit atlas maritime in Paris in 1764, an influential work for navigators and collectors.
Dimensions: H:20in L:17in
