This is an authentic 1849 steel plate engraved map titled "AMERICA," produced by the renowned German cartographer Joseph Meyer. Published as part of the influential Meyer’s Zeitungs-Atlas, this map provides a detailed mid-19th-century perspective of the Western Hemisphere, encompassing both North and South America.
The map is printed in German, featuring traditional nomenclature such as "GROSSER OCEAN" (Pacific Ocean) and "ATLANTISCHER OCEAN." It captures a pivotal moment in geographical history, showing the expansive territories of the United States just after the Mexican-American War and the early divisions of the South American republics. The engraving is remarkably precise, displaying intricate coastal outlines, mountain ranges (topography), and major river systems. This piece is professionally housed in a classic wood frame with a textured linen-wrapped mat and a gold-tone inner fillet, making it an elegant addition for collectors of antique cartography or historical decor.
