Description

This is a fine example of Chinese folk-art sculpture from the late Qing Dynasty, depicting Caishen, the venerated Daoist God of Wealth. The figure is hand-carved from a single block of wood and seated in a position of authority upon a rectangular plinth. He is dressed in traditional official robes and wears a formal bureaucrat’s headpiece, signaling his celestial rank.

In his left hand, he holds a Ruyi scepter, a symbol of power and the fulfillment of wishes; in his right, he cradles a Yuanbao (gold ingot), signifying the attraction of financial prosperity. The statue retains significant remnants of its original cinnabar-red lacquer and gold leaf gilding over a traditional gesso base. The face is particularly well-rendered, featuring a serene, dignified expression and a long, flowing beard characteristic of the deity.

Dimensions: H:12.5in L:6in W:4in

Condition Report

  • Surface: Natural age-related "crazing" and flaking of the lacquer and gesso, common in 19th-century wood carvings.

  • Structure: The wood remains solid with no major structural cracks or missing limbs.

  • Patina: Deep, authentic oxidation to the exposed wood and high-contact points, confirming its age as a household or temple altar piece.
