Description:

An authentic 19th-century engraved map of North America, titled "NORTH AMERICA," created by the respected British cartographer and original founder of the Royal Geographic Society, Joseph Wilson Lowry (1803-1879). Likely published around 1849 in an atlas such as Sharpe's Corresponding Atlas or Lowry's Table Atlas, this map is a historical document capturing the continent immediately following the conclusion of the Mexican-American War.

The map showcases the United States in a period of rapid territorial expansion, illustrating the vast "Upper California" region and the evolving boundaries of the Oregon and Nebraska Territories. It is a wonderful example of historical cartography before modern state boundaries were finalized.

Key Features:

  • Cartographer/Engraver: Joseph Wilson Lowry (British, 1803-1879)
  • Period: Mid-19th Century (c. 1849)
  • Subject: North, Central, and parts of South America, with a focus on US territorial evolution.
  • Technique: Engraving on paper, possibly with original outline hand-coloring.
  • Condition: In good condition commensurate with age and use. The map appears to have minor toning and a central fold, typical of maps removed from an atlas. It is presented in a modern, protective wooden frame with a complementary mat.
