This antique African tribal spear (olalem or erechie) is a classic example of a traditional weapon utilized by the Maasai people of East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania). Designed primarily for defense and ceremonial status, the spear is engineered in three distinct sections: a long, broad, leaf-shaped hand-forged iron blade at the top, a tapered iron counter-weight or spike butt at the bottom, and a short hardwood center section connecting them.

The blade features a prominent central ridge for structural reinforcement during thrusts. The weapon showcases an authentic weathered, dark oxidized patina across all iron components, bearing the marks of traditional blacksmithing and historical tribal use. The hardwood handle grip is firmly socketed and bound to the iron components, showing smooth wear from age and handling.

Details

  • Medium: Forged iron and indigenous hardwood

  • Dimensions: 62 inches long

  • Condition: Good antiquarian condition with signs of authentic field use and considerable age. The iron sections show a darkened, rustic patina with generalized oxidation, minor surface pitting, and light abrasions. The central wooden haft is structurally sound with expected minor scuffs and a naturally aged surface texture.
