Arnold Henry Bergier (American, 1914–2007) Cast Plaster Bust of Moses with the Ten Commandments, 1967

Description

A mid-century cast plaster or composition bust sculpture depicting a rugged, primitive rendering of Moses holding the Decalogues (Ten Commandments) following his descent from Mount Sinai. This expressive piece features a multi-toned, terra-cotta or light tan washed finish designed to simulate a natural, hand-carved stone texture. The composition dynamically captures Moses’s weathered countenance, long flowing beard, and dramatic drapery.

The piece is a vintage authorized reproduction casting of Bergier's original 1967 sculpture, typically incised with the artist’s signature "Bergier '67" and the manufacturer's mark ("Leonardo Art Works Inc." or "Austin Productions") on the reverse near the base.

About the Artist

Arnold Henry Bergier (1914–2007) was a prominent mid-century American sculptor, collagist, and caricaturist based in New York's Greenwich Village. After studying art in Paris during the late 1930s and serving as a combat artist/photographer for Admiral Nimitz’s staff during WWII, Bergier built a celebrated career creating public works for synagogues, churches, and prominent historical figures. Notably, he was commissioned to sculpt a life bust of Albert Einstein in 1950 and designed the historic Torah Ark decor for the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation Temple.
