Antonio Saura (Spanish, 1930–1998) was a leading Spanish painter and writer, and a foundational figure of post-war European abstraction. As a co-founder of the avant-garde group El Paso, he is internationally celebrated for his gestural, high-contrast figurative works that reinterpret classical themes with visceral intensity and expressive brushwork. This framed mixed media composition features a striking stylized portrait with an intricately patterned, multi-layered visage and dark hat against a neutral ground, signed Saura and dated 97 at the lower right.

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 42 x 36 in.

  • Condition: Framed presentation in vintage condition.

  • Markings: Signed Saura and dated 97 at lower right.
