An evocative contemporary Chinese ink and wash scroll painting executed on rice paper, depicting the classical Daoist subject of Laozi Leaving Hangu Pass (Laozi Chu Guan). The central composition captures the elderly sage Laozi with a flowing white beard riding calmly upon a black water buffalo, accompanied by a dynamic young boy attendant leading the way. The scene is anchored by a stylized, gnarled pine tree and expressive terrain rendered in a balance of bold splashed ink washes and minimalist iron-wire brushwork characteristic of the master Fan Zeng. The right margin features a vertical calligraphic inscription accompanied by two red artist seals, with an additional large square collector seal balancing the lower left corner.

The paper shows visible horizontal and vertical folding creases consistent with long-term storage and handling.
