This vintage Chinese black lacquer panel features an openwork square frame housing a central circular plaque. The scene is intricately detailed with hand-carved mother-of-pearl (nacre) and soapstone bas-relief figures depicting two celestial maidens or court ladies amidst a traditional landscape. One figure is captured in motion holding a fan, while the second plays a pipa (lute) against a backdrop of hand-painted gilt mountains, flora, and architectural pavilions. The square border is accented with pierced, scrolling openwork corners and comes equipped with a traditional brass hanger at the top.
