This striking, large-scale chess suite features a complete set of intricately hand-carved chessmen representing traditional Chinese historical and mythological figures.

One side is finished in a warm, patinated honey-tea brown, while the opposing side is finished in a polished antique cream. The major pieces are heavily embellished with inlaid real turquoise and coral beads. The kings and queens are modeled as elaborate royal court figures, the bishops as armored generals, the knights as cavalrymen on rearing horses, the pawns as standing infantrymen, and the rooks as towering multi-tiered pagodas.

The accompanying square wooden chess table features an inset checkered playing board in alternating natural and dark-stained wood grains, bordered by a dark frame with two built-in drawers lined in red felt to store the pieces. The table is supported by a thick pedestal column on a heavy, stepped square base. The ensemble is completed by two matching wooden pedestal stools with circular dished seats.
