Description
Lithograph after Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec depicting a circus clown standing in the ring accompanied by a small donkey and a dog. The playful composition captures the theatrical atmosphere and character studies associated with Lautrec’s depictions of Parisian entertainment and circus performers. Executed with expressive line work and selective color, the image reflects the lively spirit and observational style for which the artist is known.
This work comes from the portfolio “The Circus of Toulouse-Lautrec.” According to the accompanying edition information, the series was printed in 1990 by Original Artworks Ltd., Island Park, New York, with the lithographs hand drawn by master lithographer Marc Kniebihler and printed on Arches paper. The edition consisted of 350 numbered copies plus 20 Roman numeral copies for those involved in the project. The present example is numbered XVI/XX in pencil.
