Description:
Lithograph from Salvador Dalí’s celebrated Divine Comedy illustration series, created for Dante Alighieri’s epic poem. This composition illustrates Purgatorio, Canto XVI, titled “Dans la fumée des Coléreux” (In the Cloud of the Angry Ones).
The scene depicts figures emerging through a dense atmospheric haze representing the smoke that blinds the souls of the wrathful on the terraces of Purgatory, a symbolic punishment described in Dante’s text. Dalí interprets the episode with fluid lines and subtle tonal washes, creating a dreamlike atmosphere characteristic of the artist’s surrealist vision.
Dalí’s Divine Comedy project comprises 100 illustrations executed between 1950 and 1963 and remains one of the artist’s most ambitious graphic undertakings, combining classical literary themes with his distinctive surrealist imagery.
The work is labeled ea for artists proof in the lower margin and bears a purple colored pencil signature of the artist.
