Etruscan Bronze Double-Figure Standard, ca. 7th–6th Century B.C.

An exceptionally tall and rare Etruscan bronze openwork standard or ritual figure, cast in elongated linear form with two abstracted anthropomorphic figures rising from a shared stem. The composition features a pair of stylized, columnar bodies framed by an undulating outer contour, possibly representing drapery, a ceremonial frame, or symbolic enclosure. The heads are simplified into bulbous, rounded terminals, one with horizontal cross-bars suggestive of a headdress, divine attribute, or cultic insignia.

The upper bodies show vestigial shoulders and arms, each rendered as attenuated, tapering extensions—an aesthetic consistent with early Italic bronzework that prioritized symbolic gestures over anatomical realism. The open central voids, vertical parallel legs, and irregular profile reflect the Etruscan tradition of ritual processional standards, which were carried or mounted in sanctuaries as offerings to deities.

The surface exhibits a deep, dark brown and black encrusted patina with areas of burial accretion, fully consistent with ancient metal exposed to centuries of oxidation. Now mounted on a later custom display base.

This class of bronze, with its abstract linear geometry and ritual configuration, ranks among the most distinctive forms of Etruscan sacred art. Surviving examples of this size—27 inches tall—are extraordinarily scarce, suggesting a high-status votive function or association with a major cult center.

Mounted on a square base. Dimensions: H: 27 in, L: 5.5 in.

Condition

Stable dark patina; expected pitting, encrustation, and surface irregularity from long-term burial; minor losses to extremities consistent with age; overall excellent presence.
