Federal-style "bulls-eye" convex mirror, a classic design that originated in France and became a staple of American and British interiors in the early 19th century.

Key Features for Auction Description

  • Design & Motif: The mirror is surmounted by a stately eagle crest with outstretched wings. The circular frame typically features gilt spheres (or "beads") along the inner rim, often said to represent the original thirteen American colonies.
  • Glass Type: It features a convex mirror plate, which reflects an entire room rather than a single focal point, a functional design originally intended to help bounce light throughout a space.
  • Materials: Authentic antique versions are typically carved from wood with a gold leaf (gilt) finish. Modern or mid-century reproductions may be made of painted composite, resin, or even hard plastic.
  • Style Period: While original pieces date to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this style saw significant reproduction in the mid-20th century (Regency or Federal revival) by companies like Bombay Company or Syroco
  • Dimensions:  18x10x2
