This charming late 19th or early 20th-century Italian alabaster sculpture depicts a young fisherman in a moment of quiet labor. Hand-carved with remarkable attention to texture, the figure is shown seated upon a jagged rocky outcrop, wearing a wide-brimmed woven straw hat and a simple collared shirt with rolled sleeves. He is captured mid-task, meticulously mending or gathering a draped fishing net between his hands.
The artist, Giuseppe Gambogi (Italian, 1862–1938), was renowned for his ability to translate the softness of fabric and the ruggedness of natural stone into the translucent medium of alabaster. This piece showcases his signature style through the realistic folds of the boy's trousers and the intricate, cross-hatched detail of the hat. The sculpture stands on a circular integrated base and retains the artist’s incised signature, "G. Gambogi," on the reverse of the rock formation.
