Description: This exquisite original drawing is a masterful example of the Viennese Academy style by the renowned portraitist and draughtsman Friedrich Johann Gottlieb Lieder. Rendered in a delicate combination of graphite and sanguine on toned paper, the work showcases Lieder’s characteristic use of white chalk heightening to create a luminous, sculptural effect on the figures' anatomy.
The composition depicts two figures in a classical landscape: a male figure, possibly Bacchus, seated while pressing grapes into a large ceramic vessel, and a reclining female figure looking on. The work displays the soft, blended transitions (sfumato) and refined neoclassical proportions that made Lieder a favorite of the Austrian imperial court and aristocracy.
Medium: Graphite, sanguine (red chalk), and white chalk heightening on tan-toned paper.
Signature: Signed lower right with the artist’s characteristic script.
Condition: Commensurate with age; features light foxing and minor toning, which adds to its antique character.
Framing: Housed in a period-style wooden frame with a custom mat.
Dimensions: H:12in W:14in
