Sastoque’s Hommage to Andy Warhol (Campbell’s Soup Can, Tomato), 2022, is a rendition of Warhol’s brilliant Campbell’s Soup Can series. Warhol, famous for appropriating everyday images from consumer culture and mass media, originally displayed the series as if they were on a store shelf. While Warhol’s imagery of consumerism has not always been well-received, Sastoque’s rendition of the work confirms its everlasting impact on the art world. Warhol opened a conversation on the subject of mass media and consumerism through artistic talent and Sastoque continues the conversation with his own representation of the work. Warhol’s original is on view at the LACMA, a gift of Robert H Half through the Modern and Contemporary Art Council.
