This intimate and detailed work by contemporary Cuban artist Jacqueline Brito Jorge is part of her notable "Ikebana" series from 2007. The piece is a masterful example of her mixed media technique, which in this series frequently incorporates ceramic elements and oil on canvas to create a three-dimensional, sculptural quality within a painterly framework.

Consistent with her broader body of work, the "Ikebana" series explores the symbolic relationship between nature and human interiority. While "Ikebana" refers to the Japanese art of flower arrangement, Brito Jorge uses this motif as a metaphor for the careful, deliberate "arrangement" of one's personal identity and spiritual state. The artist's background as an expert engraver is evident in the precise, rhythmic details and the evocative, high-contrast palette often found in these smaller-scale "gem" paintings.
