This large Chinese famille noire porcelain lidded temple jar is decorated with a vibrant, dense floral and butterfly composition against a glossy black enamel ground. The body and dome lid feature oversized, colorful butterflies with open wings fluttering among blooming chrysanthemums, peonies, and leafy sprays in tones of pink, orange, turquoise, and green. The neck and foot are framed by decorative geometric ruyi and lappet borders, and the lid is crowned with a hand-modeled, glazed Foo Dog (Buddhist Lion) finial. The base is stamped with an iron-red circular seal mark with a central character emblem.
