This significant larger-format woodcut is by the esteemed German artist Max Unold (1885–1964), a leading figure of the Munich New Secession. Known for his contributions to the German Expressionist and New Objectivity movements, Unold’s work often captures the gritty, atmospheric reality of post-WWI Germany. This specific composition utilizes bold, thick-carved lines and expansive areas of negative space to create a powerful, graphic scene. Unlike his smaller periodical illustrations, this larger 14 x 18-inch format suggests a more substantial production, likely intended for a limited portfolio or as a standalone exhibition print. The work is characterized by the simplified, blocky figures and architectural forms that defined Unold's mid-career style. Unsigned as found, this piece is a classic example of the revival of the woodcut as a primary medium for German modernists.

Condition Report

The woodcut is in good condition with strong ink coverage and clear definition of the carved lines. The paper shows moderate age-toning throughout, consistent with early 20th-century woodcut paper stocks. There is some minor edge wear and light creasing in the wide margins, but the central image remains well-preserved. There are no major tears or visible repairs. The print is currently unframed and has not been examined under high magnification for specific paper watermarks.
