Mariano Rodríguez (Cuban, 1912–1990) is an example of his iconic "Gallo" (Rooster) series, which became a lifelong symbol of Cuban identity and virility in his work.

Mariano was a central figure in the vanguardia movement of Cuban art. His roosters evolved through several stylistic phases:

  • Early Period (1940s): Highly structured and influenced by Mexican muralism.
  • Late Period (as seen here): Characteristics of his later works include a looser, more expressive hand, blending expressionist figuration with symbolic abstraction.

Subject: A single, central rooster, a motif for which Mariano is internationally renowned.

  • Style & Technique: The work utilizes bold, gestural lines and a "chromatic lyricism" typical of his mature style. The palette likely includes earthy tones accented by vibrant reds and greens, evoking the tropical energy of Cuba.
  • Composition: The rooster is often depicted with a "resolute presence". In this specific piece, the use of mixed media on paper (common for his smaller studies) creates a textured, layered appearance.
  • Signature: His signature "Mariano" is visible in the lower-right corner, typically accompanied by the year of creation.
  • Dimensions 29X21
