This fine 19th-century oil on panel painting is signed M. Gottlieb in the lower left, attributed to the renowned Polish-Jewish artist Maurycy Gottlieb (1856–1879) or a member of the talented Gottlieb family of painters. The work depicts a tender romantic genre scene featuring a couple in an embrace within a historic architectural courtyard. The artist demonstrates a masterful handling of light and shadow, characteristic of the Romantic Realism movement. The figures are dressed in traditional period attire, with the warm red of the woman's skirt providing a focal point against the earthy, tonal palette of the stone surroundings. The painting is housed in a substantial, multi-tiered black Flemish-style frame with a gilded inner liner that enhances the depth and classical appeal of the composition.
Dimensions: H: 24 in W: 21 in
The painting appears to be in good antique condition with age-appropriate craquelure consistent with 19th-century oil works on panel. The surface shows some darkening and a light layer of surface grime that would benefit from a professional cleaning. The signature in the lower left is clear and legible. The frame shows minor signs of wear and small scuffs to the ebonized finish but remains structurally sound and highly presentable.
