This color photograph captures a young Mursi girl from the Omo Valley in Ethiopia. Her face is decorated with intricate white chalk patterns, a traditional form of body art used for aesthetic expression and cultural identity. She wears multiple strands of colorful beads and a simple leather garment, characteristic of the nomadic and pastoralist Mursi people. Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher have dedicated their careers to documenting the vanishing traditions and sacred ceremonies of the African continent, with a particular focus on the unique visual languages of the Omo Valley tribes. This work is an Artist Proof (AP) from a very limited edition, hand-signed by both photographers in the lower right margin.
