Description: A historical map titled the "Northern Section of the United States including Canada &c.," created by the Scottish-American cartographer John Melish. The map was originally part of his Military and Topographical Atlas of the United States and was often referred to as the "Map of the Seat of War in North America" during the War of 1812 era.

  • Cartographer: John Melish (1771-1822).
  • Original Publication Year: The map was first published as "Map of the Seat of War" in the 1813 and 1815 editions of his military atlas. A subsequent version, titled "Northern section of the United States," was published in 1816 as a separate work and as part of his Traveller's Directory.
  • Region: The map covers the northeastern United States and the contiguous British possessions in Canada, extending from the Great Lakes (including most of Lake Michigan) to the Atlantic Ocean, and south to parts of New Jersey, Maryland, and Ohio.
  • Historical Context: Published during and immediately after the War of 1812, the map was a significant cartographic artifact used to track military operations and illustrate the boundary disputes of the time. It includes details such as forts, towns, roads, distances between locations, and a population table.
