Description:
Striking modernist figural composition attributed to Oswaldo Guayasamín (Ecuadorian, 1919–1999), one of Latin America’s most influential 20th-century artists. The work features an elongated stylized figure rendered in Guayasamín’s distinctive expressive manner, characterized by bold graphic outlines, symbolic facial features, and dramatic contrasts of color. The composition combines deep cobalt blue fields with textured gold and black surfaces, creating a powerful visual presence that emphasizes both emotional intensity and sculptural form.

The painting displays heavy textured application with layered surfaces and incised linear elements, producing a dynamic relief-like effect across the canvas. The stylized face, elongated limbs, and symbolic forms are consistent with Guayasamín’s exploration of human suffering, spirituality, and identity—central themes throughout his celebrated career.

Signed “Guayasamín” at the lower left. A label and documentation from Ecuador are present on the reverse.

Guayasamín’s works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museo Casa Guayasamín in Quito, and he is widely recognized as one of the leading figures of Latin American expressionism.

Dimensions:
Approx. H: 62in W:29in
