A mirrored pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases, each supported by the back of a seated Shishi (lion dog). The vases feature a rich gold ground decorated with finely painted arhats (immortals) or disciples in traditional garments, accented by raised moriage details. Each vase is flanked by molded architectural or figural elements and rests upon a Shishi with a textured, polychrome stippled coat and gilded mane. The undersides bear the red seal mark for the Taniguchi workshop.
