Pair of commemorative ceramic plates honoring José Martí (Cuban, 1853–1895), issued for the centennial of his birth, 1853–1953. Each plate features a portrait of Martí set against a bookshelf backdrop, accompanied by the Cuban flag and the patriotic phrase, "La Patria es Ara y No Pedestal." The reverse bears a printed excerpt from Martí's writings and facsimile signature.
