This dynamic and rare original mid-century modern sculpture is the work of acclaimed Mexican artist Armando Ortega Orozco. Titled "Promoteo" (Prometheus and The Flame), the piece was executed in 1966 and represents a significant example of Orozco's expertise in welded metal during a pivotal decade of his career.
The sculpture depicts a stylized figure—the Titan Prometheus—in a moment of intense kinetic movement. The torso is fashioned from a shield-like metal plate featuring a repoussé sunburst or lion-like motif, while the limbs are intricately constructed from a dense assembly of industrial metal fragments, nails, and welded rods. This "brutalist" approach to the human form creates a striking contrast between the solid, central plate and the airy, jagged textures of the reaching arms and leaping legs. The base is expertly integrated, using rebar and folded metal sheets to suggest a rocky or terrestrial origin from which the figure ascends.
Armando Ortega Orozco is a highly decorated sculptor who studied under masters like Francisco Zúñiga and David Alfaro Siqueiros. By the time this piece was created, Orozco had already won the "Diego Rivera" prize (1959) and had been commissioned by the Mexican government for international exhibitions, including the 21st Century Fair in Seattle.
