Description

This is a rare and museum-worthy antique iron strongbox, often referred to as an "Armada" chest or coffer, likely originating from Nuremberg, Germany, dating to the 17th century. These heavy, transportable safes were used to secure valuables, gold, silver, or important documents during transport on land and by ship in an era before modern banking.

Key Features:

  • Construction: Hand-forged, robust wrought-iron construction with extensive studded iron banding and heavy-duty side carrying handles.
  • Lock Mechanism: Features a hidden keyhole,  concealed behind a false or decorative escutcheon at the top center of the box, it is only revealed when the false bolts at the sides are acitvated, which operates an elaborate multi-bolt locking mechanism located within the lid.
  • Aesthetics: The front is adorned with an ornate, pierced iron scrollwork cartouche design surrounding the keyhole.
  • Condition: The chest presents with an attractive, aged patina and wear consistent with its age and historical use. Traces of original polychrome (multicolor) paint may be visible in protected areas.
  • Accessories: Includes the period-style iron key shown, which operates the lock mechanism.
  • Dimensions: H:12in L:24in W:13in
