Description
This is a superb, authentic copperplate engraved antique map, titled "Brixiani Agri Typus" (A Map of the Brixian Fields). It depicts the region of Brescia in Northern Italy, a province of the Republic of Venice, nestled between Lake Garda and Lake Iseo.
Key Features:
- Renowned Cartographer: Created by Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), the Flemish cartographer and geographer recognized as the creator of the world's first modern atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World).
- Historical Significance: This map is considered the first printed map of the Brescia region to appear within a systematic, uniform atlas. The original cartographic survey was conducted by Cristoforo Sorte in 1560.
- Detailed Engraving: The map features fine detail including topography, rivers, settlements, and lakes (Lago Di Garda, Lago d'Iseo, etc.), with three elaborate decorative cartouches and a scale of miles. The orientation is unique, with north positioned to the left side of the map for optimal page layout within the atlas.
- Publication: Sourced from an edition of the highly influential Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which was first published in 1570 and went through many editions in various languages until 1612. The date "1590" is visible on the main title cartouche.
- Dimensions: H:16in W:23in
Condition report: The map and text pages show heavy age-related wear including toning, foxing, creasing, edge losses, and small tears. There is visible paper thinning and losses along the margins. Printed details remain largely legible despite wear. Overall condition is consistent with a well-used antique printed map and text.
