Description:

A monumental pre-Columbian Taino monolithic axe, hand-carved from a fine-grained, hard serpentine or basalt-like stone. The entire piece is a single carving, featuring an intricate anthropomorphic effigy figure with a distinct face carved at the base of the handle. A complex symbolic or geometric pattern is engraved across the midsection and blade area.

This piece is characteristic of the Taino culture, who were the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean islands, specifically Hispaniola (modern-day Dominican Republic and Haiti). Monolithic axes such as this are believed to have been ceremonial scepters or ritual objects rather than functional tools, likely held during significant community gatherings or to represent a specific clan.

  • Culture: Taino (Arawak)
  • Period: Circa 1000–1500 CE
  • Material: Carved hard stone (likely serpentine or basalt)

  • Condition: Very fine condition with signs of age and wear consistent with an authentic artifact of this period. Refer to photos for details.
