This framed intaglio print by American artist Richard Volpe is titled Termina and dated August 1972, as documented on the original Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the verso. The work presents a minimalist, atmospheric landscape composition featuring stark tree lines, open negative space, and a subdued tonal palette that emphasizes stillness and spatial depth.
The composition is divided into horizontal bands, with distant tree silhouettes and a sparse fence element anchoring the foreground. Volpe’s restrained use of line and texture creates a contemplative, almost meditative scene, characteristic of his mature printmaking style during the early 1970s.
According to the certificate, Termina is an original intaglio print, printed by the artist on Rives BFK paper. This example is number 69 of an authorized signed edition of 100, with 10 artist’s proofs noted and no publisher’s or unsigned proofs. The plate is documented as cancelled, further confirming the finite nature of the edition.
The print is signed in pencil by Richard Volpe and accompanied by the original signed certificate bearing the artist’s authorized signature. Volpe was born in Pennsylvania in 1926 and became a nationally exhibited printmaker after transitioning from illustration and playwriting to fine art printmaking in the mid-1960s. His works are known for their quiet intensity, strong compositional balance, and refined technical execution.
