An exceptionally detailed and finely engraved antique map of the South American continent, originally designed and drawn by the prominent German cartographer Johann Friedrich von Stülpnagel (1786–1865). This hand-colored copperplate engraving was published by the renowned Justus Perthes Geographical Institute in Gotha, Germany.
This specific edition, dated 1860, was primarily featured in the 3rd edition of Stieler’s Handatlas (c. 1862), which was considered the pinnacle of 19th-century cartographic accuracy. The map offers a fascinating historical snapshot of the continent during a period of evolving national identities and post-colonial border shifts.
