This is an original woodblock engraving from Salvador Dalí’s masterwork series, The Divine Comedy. Commissioned in the 1950s and completed in the early 1960s, this series is considered one of the most important print suites of the 20th century.
This specific work, Inferno Canto 14, illustrates the Seventh Circle of Hell. It depicts Capaneus, the giant blasphemer, lying defiantly upon the "Burning Sands" under a rain of fire. Dalí uses a mathematical red grid to represent the structured, inescapable nature of Dante's hell, contrasting it with the organic, skeletal distortion of the colossal figure.
