Sastoque’s Hommage to Vermeer (Girl with a Pearl Earring), 2021, is a rendition of Johannes Vermeer’s world-renowned oil painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, c. 1665. Vermeer produced only 36 works that are known to be his. The original portrait now resides permanently in the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague. This work is famous for the exotic dress, blue and gold turban, and dazzling earring the girl is wearing. The dark background in juxtaposition with the fairness of the girl creates an intimate setting which draws the viewer in. Sastoque has stayed true to the intimate setting with the black background and the daintiness of the young woman.
