Description
An original Surrealist oil painting on masonite by the prominent Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie, known as the "queen of the bohemian artists." Dated 1967, this work features one of Abercrombie's signature dreamlike, enigmatic motifs: a hybrid snail-woman figure resting on a flat landscape beneath a dark night sky. A crescent moon and a singular, low-lying cloud illuminate the stark scene, evoking the artist's characteristic sense of solitary, quiet mystery. The piece is signed and dated "abercrombie '67" in her distinct lowercase script in the lower right corner. Housed in a vintage, heavy tiered gilt gesso and wood frame.
