Painted cast iron mechanical coin bank depicting a seated young girl interacting with a large dog, mounted on a green, red, and yellow base embossed "SPEAKING DOG." The design reproduces the late 19th-century Speaking Dog mechanical bank patented by Charles G. Shepard and Peter Adams and manufactured by Shepard Hardware Company of Buffalo, New York. In the original design, activating the mechanism causes the girl's arm to deposit a coin while the dog opens its mouth and wags its tail.

The underside of this example has a modern circular coin-access plug and Phillips-head screw, features also documented on contemporary reproductions of this model; therefore, it is cataloged as a reproduction rather than an original 19th-century bank.
