This antique textile work depicts St. Matthias, the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot. The figure is rendered in a stylized, elongated form typical of liturgical or folk art traditions, holding a halberd—his traditional iconographic attribute. The piece is meticulously executed using fine needlework, with vertical stitching creating the texture of the robes and a golden-threaded halo surrounding the saint's head. He holds a blooming staff, often associated with divine selection. The work is set against a neutral fabric ground and housed in a classic carved giltwood frame. The reverse of the frame bears a handwritten identification label for the saint.
