Eduard Nakhamkin was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on June 18th, 1938. Despite his early academic success, becoming a math professor in Riga, his ambitions were curtailed by the pervasive anti-Semitism of the time. Realizing his true passion lay not in academia but in business, Nakhamkin made the bold decision to emigrate to the United States in 1974, arriving with only $270 and not speaking a word of English. His journey into the art world and his deep appreciation for art began when he met artists who were also migrating to the United States. Inspired by their creativity and resilience, Nakhamkin opened his first gallery on the second floor of a walk-up in New York City, marking the start of his illustrious career.
As Nakhamkin delved into the world of underground Soviet artists, his mission became clear: to promote these hidden talents from the USSR. Working independently, he established three galleries in Manhattan, two in Los Angeles, two in San Francisco, and one in Yokohama, Japan—each a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the arts. As his efforts gained international recognition, Nakhamkin’s success eventually led to a groundbreaking joint venture with the Ministry of Culture and the Union of Soviet Artists during Gorbachev's presidency. This collaboration, which came after Nakhamkin had already achieved significant success on his own, facilitated the production of two outstanding exhibitions with Russian museums: Art of the Pushkin Era and 100 Years of Russian Ballet. Both exhibitions received high acclaim and were prominently featured in The New York Times and many other publications all throughout America.Through his galleries, Nakhamkin not only showcased the richness of underground Soviet art to a Western audience but also built a legacy as a pioneer who bridged cultural divides through the universal language of art.
