A powerful and atmospheric etching depicting a bustling harbor scene at Sunrise Newlyn Harbor. The artist, John Michaux, a notable Belgian painter associated with the Flemish Luminist tradition, masterfully uses the etching medium to capture the dramatic interplay of light and shadow on the water and the sturdy forms of the docked vessels.

The composition is rich in tonal contrasts, showcasing a view of working-class maritime life, with large ships dominating the background and smaller boats pulled ashore in the foreground. Michaux's work is celebrated for its harmonious blend of nature and human activity, often focusing on river and coastal scenes with a romantic atmosphere.

This work demonstrates the artist's skill as a printmaker; he produced numerous etchings, many of which were published in limited-edition albums. Michaux studied at the Antwerp Art Academy and with Frans Hens, developing a style that shows the influence of Impressionism. His works have a strong presence in the Belgian art market and have been offered at auction numerous times.

Medium: Etching on paper.
