This original color woodcut, titled "The Simoniacs" (Les Simoniaques), is a primary plate from Salvador Dalí’s 1960–1964 monumental suite, "The Divine Comedy". Illustrating Inferno Canto 19, the composition depicts the punishment of those who sold church offices. Dalí illustrates the Third Bolgia of the eighth circle of Hell, where sinners are placed head-first into holes in the rock, their protruding feet engulfed in flames. This "reverse baptism" is rendered with Dalí’s signature surrealist flair, using vibrant reds and earthy ochres. The work was meticulously produced using dozens of hand-carved woodblocks to replicate the textures and fluid washes of Dalí's original watercolor.
The piece is professionally presented in an ornate gold-finished frame with a white acid-free mat and a gold-tone identification plaque.
