Description

This impressive mid-century oil on canvas depicts a Native American Chieftain in a noble, three-quarter profile. The subject is rendered with significant attention to his ceremonial regalia, most notably a grand feathered war bonnet featuring intricate beadwork, white and brown feathers, and a vibrant medicine wheel rosette. He wears a traditional buckskin tunic accented with fur trim and a silver-tone breastplate.

The artist, signing as A. Norman (visible in a distinctive magenta script in the lower right), utilizes a confident, painterly technique with visible brushstrokes that add texture and movement, particularly in the feathers and fur. The muted, atmospheric background allows the warm earth tones of the subject to stand out.

The piece is housed in its original, highly ornate Baroque-style gilt wood and gesso frame, which features deep-relief floral scrolls and acanthus leaf motifs. The reverse shows a classic "Made in USA" stamp on the wooden stretcher, consistent with mid-20th-century American art production.

Condition Report

The painting is in overall good vintage condition. The canvas is taut on its original wooden stretchers. There are minor signs of age-appropriate wear to the gilt finish of the frame and very slight surface dust on the canvas.
