Description

A pair of significant original German Expressionist prints by Richard Seewald (1889-1976) and Max Unold (1885-1964).

Lot Details:

  • Richard Seewald, Der Hirte (The Shepherd): This is an original color woodcut created circa 1918. It was published in 1919 in the prestigious deluxe art periodical Genius, a key publication of the Expressionist movement. The work is part of the permanent collections of major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The print is hand-colored with stencils (pochoir) on laid paper and, as published in the journal, is unsigned.
  • Max Unold, In Memoriam René Beeh: This is an original woodcut created in 1922. The image depicts a gathering of the artists Unold, Seewald, and René Beeh in conversation. This print was published in a small edition for the Ganymed portfolio, a significant Expressionist yearbook published by the Marées Society. The print is typically signed and dated in pencil.
