United States National Defense Service Medal authorized in 1953 and awarded for honorable active military service during designated periods of conflict, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and the War on Terror. The bronze-tone medal depicts an American bald eagle perched on a sword and palm branch and is suspended from a ribbon featuring central yellow, white, blue, and red stripes representing the armed forces.
