This is an original polychrome woodblock print (ukiyo-e) by the celebrated Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). The piece is titled "Goyu" (御油), depicting the 39th station of the historic Tōkaidō road, which connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and Kyoto during the Edo period (1615–1868).
The scene is an illustration from the popular comic novel Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige (Shanks' Mare) by Jippensha Ikku, which humorously details the misadventures of two travelers, Yaji and Kita. The print captures a lively moment in the post-town, where bold female touts are seen stopping travelers in the street to solicit their business at the local inns. The composition is characteristic of Hiroshige's work, known for its lyrical landscapes and detailed insight into the daily life of 19th-century Japan.
