This iconic vintage illustration serves as one of the most celebrated and recognizable satirical magazine covers in American history. Originally created for the March 29, 1976 edition of The New Yorker, the composition masterfully presents a localized, egocentric perspective of geography from the vantage point of a Manhattan resident. The foreground details 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue with intricate, stylized brownstones, warehouses, pedestrians, and city traffic depicted in fine linework. Beyond the Hudson River and a thin strip labeled "Jersey," the rest of the United States opens up as a vast, sparsely populated plain featuring generalized landmarks like rocks for Utah and small mounds for Chicago, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. The Pacific Ocean bounds the landscape, capped by a narrow horizon indicating distant slivers of China, Japan, and Russia. This classic piece elegantly captures the humorous essence of mid-century urban provincialism.

The poster bears the printed artist signature "Steinberg" in the lower right corner within the plate matrix. A copyright line reading "© 1976 The New Yorker Magazine, Inc." is explicitly printed directly below the signature line. The piece is presented under glass and framed in a clean, minimalist black metal poster frame.
